Relocating and moving can be a stressful time in anyone’s life. Professional movers can remove some of this stress, but it is still up to the homeowner to follow through with suggestions made by movers. Unless you have the ability to pay movers to pack and unpack all of your belongings, there are some suggestions you should take. And, since movers do this for a living, their input can be very valuable. Here are some suggestions to help make your move stress-free.
1. Moving Checklist
Create a list of things to do. This will allow you to think about your move and in what order you need to achieve different tasks. Additionally, if you have new ideas, you can add them to your list. Having a game plan lets you decide how you want everything to run. It also lets you check in with your family to make sure everyone is on the same page.
This is the first step in becoming organized. Organization can help reduce the stress of moving.
2. Purge
Going through all those closets, the basement, and boxes you have not looked in for a long time might seem like a daunting task. But, if you start early, you can get it done. You can throw away what you do not want or give away things in good condition. Having a yard sale can help you get rid of some unwanted items while earning a little extra cash.
After your yard sale and purge, you can donate all these things to a local organization. This will reduce the number of belongings you have to pack and unpack. And, if you are getting rid of some large items, it might even affect the kind of equipment the movers will need on the day of the move.
3. Pack and Label
Begin packing things you do not use on a regular basis in boxes. Make sure the boxes are clearly labeled, so you know what room to put them in for unpacking when you get to your destination.
As you go from room to room, only pack things from that room in the same box. This lets the movers put boxes in the right place, so you will not have to move it again later.
4. Get Supplies Early
Do not wait until the last minute, thinking you will get your boxes from the local supermarket. Start getting boxes early, a liquor store is a good place. You want to make sure you do not get boxes that are too big because unless you are packing bedding in them, they will be heavy. Also, remember you will need markers for labeling and tape for securing the boxes. You can even get wardrobe boxes, so you do not have to pack all your clothes in regular boxes. These boxes let you hang your clothes (on their hangers) inside the box.
5. Move at the Right Time
Sometimes, moving on a weekday is better than a weekend. It ensures that all the banks and utility companies will be open. Additionally, many movers will give a lower quote because there is a higher demand to move on a weekend.
