Professional Movers' Tips for a Stress-Free Relocation

Relocating and moving can be a stressful time in anyone’s life. Professional movers can remove some of this stress, but it is still up to the homeowner to follow through with suggestions made by movers. Unless you have the ability to pay movers to pack and unpack all of your belongings, there are some suggestions you should take. And, since movers do this for a living, their input can be very valuable. Here are some suggestions to help make your move stress-free.

1. Moving Checklist

Create a list of things to do. This will allow you to think about your move and in what order you need to achieve different tasks. Additionally, if you have new ideas, you can add them to your list. Having a game plan lets you decide how you want everything to run. It also lets you check in with your family to make sure everyone is on the same page.

This is the first step in becoming organized. Organization can help reduce the stress of moving.

2. Purge

Going through all those closets, the basement, and boxes you have not looked in for a long time might seem like a daunting task. But, if you start early, you can get it done. You can throw away what you do not want or give away things in good condition. Having a yard sale can help you get rid of some unwanted items while earning a little extra cash.

After your yard sale and purge, you can donate all these things to a local organization. This will reduce the number of belongings you have to pack and unpack. And, if you are getting rid of some large items, it might even affect the kind of equipment the movers will need on the day of the move.

3. Pack and Label

Begin packing things you do not use on a regular basis in boxes. Make sure the boxes are clearly labeled, so you know what room to put them in for unpacking when you get to your destination.

As you go from room to room, only pack things from that room in the same box. This lets the movers put boxes in the right place, so you will not have to move it again later.

4. Get Supplies Early

Do not wait until the last minute, thinking you will get your boxes from the local supermarket. Start getting boxes early, a liquor store is a good place. You want to make sure you do not get boxes that are too big because unless you are packing bedding in them, they will be heavy. Also, remember you will need markers for labeling and tape for securing the boxes. You can even get wardrobe boxes, so you do not have to pack all your clothes in regular boxes. These boxes let you hang your clothes (on their hangers) inside the box.

5. Move at the Right Time

Sometimes, moving on a weekday is better than a weekend. It ensures that all the banks and utility companies will be open. Additionally, many movers will give a lower quote because there is a higher demand to move on a weekend.

List of Moving Boxes and Supplies You Need for Packing Your Home

Packing up your home for moving can be overwhelming, but with the right supplies you can get everything in your new home safe and sound and start the unpacking process.

You can purchase boxes from a store, but you may also be able to get some for free. Start with grocery stores and other retailers that may have leftover boxes and see what you can find. After that, purchase the right amount of the ones you will need. You will need different types of boxes, depending on what you are packing in your home.

  • A 1.5 cubic foot moving box can be used to carry up to 60 pounds. You may want to use these boxes for fragile items in the kitchen, such as dishes or other smaller fragile appliances like lamps. Even though it can hold 60 pounds, try to keep the weight under 50.
  • A 3.0 cubic foot moving box can hold up to 65 pounds and can be used to move clothing, electronics, and pots and pans from the kitchen.
  • A 4.5 cubic foot box can move about 65 pounds, and this is a good thing for larger kitchen appliances.
  • A 6.0 cubic foot moving box can carry about 70 pounds, but you wouldn’t want to overfill the box because it can become too heavy to move. This box is useful for toys, pillows, blankets, and cushions for the couch or chair.
  • A 6.1 cubic foot moving box is a rectangular shape, but it is like the 6.0 cubic foot moving box and can be used for items that don’t fit in the other box.
  • Hanging wardrobe boxes can be found in several different styles and are perfect for moving clothes, because they contain a metal bar to hang your items. Use these to pack clothes that can’t be packed flat. These boxes can get heavy and do take up a lot of space in the truck, so if you can move clothes flat, you should do so.
  • Lay-down wardrobe moving boxes are good for items in dresser drawers that you only want to fold once. It can also get heavy, so be careful while you are packing it.
  • Picture and mirror boxes are great for framed pictures, artwork, and mirrors. Be sure to have bubble wrap for these items.
  • Mattress boxes can be necessary if you want to avoid your mattress being punctured, or if it’s being stored for a while. This will ensure it is better protected from outside elements compared to just being wrapped in plastic.

This should include bubble wrap and other items to help cushion dishes. You can also consider using socks, towels, and T-shirts that you would bring anyway.

These should be used to protect furniture from scratches. You can use blankets you planned on moving anyway and kill two birds with one stone.

It’s best to use old-fashioned duct tape for moving boxes. Be sure to have lots of it on hand because you may want to double tape boxes to make them secure, especially if they are heavier. If you are using reusable storage bins for moving, having masking tape for labeling is helpful.

Use these to make sure boxes are clearly marked. You can buy a colored set so that you can color coordinate boxes for which room they should go into.
